Skincare Sundays: Self-tanning and Body Scrubs

Summer during a pandemic has been slightly different this year. Normally, I would be spending my days outside in the city and going to the beach to work on my seasonal summer tan. This year, I’ve had to resort to other means for self-tanning: Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning drops (Light – Sun-Kissed Glow)!!

Now I’m no expert is self tanning since I’ve only tried one other self tanning product – Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, but…between the two, I am totally in love with the Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning drops.

Jergens vs Isle of Paradise Reviews

  • Application
Jergens is very easy to apply since it comes as a lotion. You simply just need to put some product in your hand and rub it on your skin and all over your body. To apply on the face, it is recommended to purchase the Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer. When applying the lotion, I did not use any tanning mittens – all I had to do after was simply rinse my hands after applying.
Isle of Paradise definitely requires more steps to apply. The drops need to be mixed in with your moisturizer and then applied all over the body with a tanning mitten. You can certainly apply it with your hands, but I prefer using the **St. Tropez tanning mittens since this self tanning product will definitely stain your hands. These drops can also be applied to the face – just mix it in with your face moisturizer. Additionally, I like to use the Real Techniques Body Buffing Brush when applying on the face and neck to get an even tanning glow.
**Side note: I did purchase and use the Isle of Paradise tanning mitten, but after 3 uses, the seams started to split. So unfortunately, I do not recommend purchasing their tanning mitten.
  • Scent
Jergens had a very strong scent and while it wasn’t awful, smelling that all night gave me a headache.
Isle of Paradise did not have any scent. The only scent I picked up was the aloe vera scent from my moisturizer.
  • Tanning Glow
Jergens gives a more subtle and gradual glow. I had to apply the moisturizer everyday for a week before I saw any difference on my skin, and even then, the tan was very subtle. I will say though, I did purchase the fair to medium tone so that could be a reason why I was not seeing much of a tan.
Isle of Paradise gives a quicker tan – develops within 4-6 hours and the tan is definitely more visible. I like applying the tan at night and then waking up in the morning to a beautiful sun-kissed glow. The tan for me usually lasts about 4-5 days before I need to exfoliate and reapply. I have noticed however, after 3 weeks of using this self-tanner, my tan did stay longer even after exfoliating. I will note though, that I was spending more time outside so I was also getting a more natural tan.
  • Price
Jergens is your classic affordable drugstore product – retailing at $2.99 at Walgreens. You can find this product at any Duane Reade, Walgreens, CVS, Target, etc.
Isle of Paradise retails for $29 and I bought mine at Sephora. You can also purchase this at their retail site.

Although Isle of Paradise is significantly more pricey than Jergens, I feel that the results from Isle of Paradise is well worth the cost. Overall, I was happier with the tan results and I would definitely purchase this product again. For anyone who is looking to get that glow-y tan before Labor Day weekend, I highly recommend the Isle of Paradise self-tanning drops.

Another summer essential that I have been loving recently is the Tree Hut Coco Colada Shea Sugar Scrub.

I adore the scent of coconut in the summer and every time I use this scrub, it reminds me of summer beaches and ocean waves. This body scrub is really affordable – retailing at $7.19 at Ulta and has lasted me for about 3 months now. I use this scrub once a week, usually on a Friday when I give myself a more pampered spa treatment. I’ve also found this scrub super helpful in taking off my Isle of Paradise self tanner.

This scrub contains little beads that really exfoliate the body leaving you feeling super clean and smelling amazing. After using the scrub, I never feel the need to moisturize just because my skin never feels dry after using it, though I do believe it never hurts to always stay moisturized.

So, would I recommend this body scrub? Absolutely! Tree Hut body scrubs come in many scents so I’m excited to use a more fall/winter scented scrub once I’ve finished using this jar.

So tell me, what are some of your favorite summer skincare essentials?

Makeup Mondays: Keeping my skin hydrated

As someone who constantly struggles with dry skin all year round, I am constantly looking for the best hydrating skincare products. After having tried many products for the past few years, I’m finally here to share them with you!

Belif Creamy Cleansing Foam Moist
The first step to any skincare routine is to wash our faces to get off all the dirt and grime we collect on our skin throughout the day. It’s kind of like wiping the slate clean! My go-to face wash is the Belif Creamy Cleansing Foam Moist. It has a refreshing lime smell that always reminds me of summer. It’s tough enough to leave my face feeling clean but gentle enough that my face doesn’t feel tight after a good rinse. Because it foams up after running it under some warm water and rubbing your hands together, a small dollup of this face wash goes a long way, which I truly appreciate.

Belif Aqua Bomb
This moisturizer is literally my holy grail and lifeline when it comes to skincare. It keeps my face soft and moisturized, while never clogging up my pores – which happens a lot with cream-based moisturizers. It settles into my skin within seconds and feels cool and refreshing.

Laneige Sleep Mask
I use this sleep mask once a week — usually on a Wednesday or Thursday as a quick pampering pick me up during the middle of the week. Right before I go to bed and after I’ve washed my face, I scoop up a small amount (about the size of a quarter) with my hands and rub it all over my face and neck. The next morning, I simply rinse my face, leaving it soft and moist for the entire day. I like using this just as a way to remind myself to stay glowing and fresh and preparing for the weekend!

Sheet Face Masks
I like to end the weekend as a mini celebration by using a Sheet Face Mask to really hydrate my face. I’ve been a huge fan of the Sephora Collection Masks. Two of my favorites are the Pearl and Coconut Masks. Putting on a face mask is the perfect way to pamper myself on a low friendly budget yet still feel like royalty.

Ahava Dead Sea Mineral Hand Cream
I first received this product as a Christmas gift and it has truly changed my life. I’m not a fan of hand creams that leave my hands feeling sticky and oily, and I was really happy to have been introduced to this hand cream. It’s water-based and simply melts into your skin within minutes. It has a really nice scent (similar to Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Lotion) but not as overbearing.

Do you have any products you would recommend for keeping lips hydrated?

“No Makeup” Makeup Look

Hey Fashionistas,

Now….generally, I would have filmed this look but I’ve been super busy and haven’t had a chance to really film…soo I’m going to stick to the classic blogging and writing to show you the products I love to use to create my recent “No Makeup” Makeup Look.

unnamed-1

Summers here in NYC can get pretty hot but more importantly, it can get very very humid here. Wearing a full face of makeup on a humid day will literally start to irritate me and I can just feel my makeup melt off. On top of that, I can just feel my pores screaming at me.

So during the summer, I turn to my “No Makeup” Makeup look. It literally consist of 7 products: primer, BB cream, concealer, highlight, blush, and setting spray.

unnamed

I start with my favorite Porefessional primer by Benefit and with my fingers, I gently layer it over my cheeks, nose, and forehead (where I have the most pores).

With my NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in shade Creme Brûlée, I spot-treat the redness and blemishes on my cheeks and chin. Using my Real Techniques Buffing Brush, I press and blend it into my skin. Usually, I would use my Real Techniques Sponge and blend that in, but I’ve been really into using my brushes this month.

Taking my Clinique BB Acne Solution cream, I put a few drops onto the same Real Technique Buffing Brush and slowly buff that all over my face. Because I’ve already put on some concealer, I don’t want to move the product as I’m buffing it into my skin. So the technique that I use is gently with a slight pressure, press the BB cream into my skin. Because the brush is dense enough, it does a beautiful job at blending (almost as well as my Real Techniques Complexion Sponge!) Now you’re probably wondering, why did I put concealer before I put on the BB Cream? I’ve noticed that putting on concealer under your foundation gives it a more natural glow look. When I do my full face glam, I will use the concealer under my eyes to set it up for an intense highlight and glowy look.

Once my base is on, I take my Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray and spray that all over my face to set it. This part is key since I am not using setting powder, I need to make sure that my makeup does not come off in the middle of the day.

As I’m waiting for my face to dry and set, I pick up my Benefit Gimme Brow Gel and quickly do my brows. I love this product because it’s just a spoolie with gel and you can easily just comb over your brows giving it a natural and simple look.

When my face is dry, I’ll pick up my Elf Baked Highlight in Moonlight Pearl and Elf Highlighter brush. I’ll swipe that across my cheekbones and bring that to my temples, creating a “C” swiping movement. **Tip: To make the highlight pop out more, spray your brush with setting spray before dipping into highlight

Next, taking my Real Techniques Blush Brush and dipping it into my Tarte Amazonian Clay 12- Hour Blush in Paaarty, I’ll gently swipe that over my cheekbones and over the highlight to give me natural rosy glowy cheeks.

And last but not least, I set everything with final spritz of my Urban Decay setting spray.

Friday Finds: Bobbi Brown, Tarte, Benefit

Hey Fashionista,

So this past month was my birthday month, which of course you know what that means – NEW MAKEUP!!!!

The-Hills.gif

[Source]

I actually bought a bunch of new makeup and received some free samples from Sephora, but that’s for a later post. Today I want to focus on 3 new products: Bobbi Brown Mini Bronzing Power, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush, Benefit Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer.

Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder – Medium

[Pictures have no flash]

I received this bronzer powder from my 500 points reward. It came with a kit but I haven’t used the rest of the products yet, so we’re just gonna focus on the powder. Even though this bronzer is a powder, when I swatch it, it feels so velvety and buttery. The pigment is perfect for my complexion. I’m generally pretty fair but with the summer and my trip to San Diego, I have a somewhat nice tan to work with right now. When I first saw it, I immediately thought that it was too dark but surprisingly, it blended perfectly on my cheeks. The bronzer is a perfect match with my tan on my shoulders. It gives off the right amount of warmth to my face and is super buildable. The pigment is dark enough for me to use as a contour but for a more casual look, I can use this as an all over bronzer for my face and body.

Would I recommend this to a friend?? Absolutely!! This bronzer comes in several shades so you’re sure to find a match for you!

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush – Paaarty

[Pictures have no flash]

This blush was part of the birthday gift set….hence the name Paaarty!!! Can we just take a moment to think about how cute and perfect that name is for this gift set??

Ok…so this blush is absolutely gorgeous. Now during the summer, I tend to stick more to bronzers than blushes since I love the summer bronze look but this past Monday, I decided to add some rosy-ness to my cheeks to change things up a bit. It was gorgeous, but I do need to warn you, the colors are extremely pigment!! Literally…you just need 2 dabs on the brush and that’s it. I made a mistake and I dabbed, swirled, and pressed my brush into the pot and I ended up having to tap off tons of product. And even then, I ended up putting too much so I had blend….like I was making a smoothie on my face. It did end up really pretty but lesson learned: less is more 😉

Would I recommend this to a friend?  Yes….but you need to really find the right color for your skin tone. I loved this color but I definitely want to try out other shades to find the right summer blush color.

Benefit Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer – Color 2 Light Medium

[Pictures have no flash]

This concealer is actually a new arrival at Sephora. I really loved their original Boi-ing concealer so when this new line came in, I immediately had to get it. I got mine in shade 2 – light medium which is a little fair for my skin tone, but shade 3 was too dark for me so I settled for this one. It is very creamy and extremely blendable. However, the one thing that I am not a fan of is how drying it can be. My skin is pretty dry so this concealer doesn’t really give off the “airbrush” effect. It blends beautifully but the final effect makes my skin look kind of flaky. I’m thinking of getting the Benefit hydrating concealer and trying that one instead.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Hmmm…yes but you definitely need to know your skin. It’s extremely blendable and creamy but depending on your skin, it might not be the right fit. Know your skin and don’t be afraid to ask the makeup artists at Sephora to help you out!

So there you have it – my recent Friday finds! What are some products you would like me to try out and review?

Chrissie Carly

Friday Finds: Belif True Cream Aqua Bomb

Hey Fashionistas,

The thirst is realll…..for Belif The True Cream – Aqua Bomb!

s1686427-main-Lhero

Source

I first heard of Belif from my colleague who recommended it to me since I was complaining that my current moisturizing cream was too heavy. I felt that my past cream clogged up my pores…causing me to break out even more. So I went to Sephora to check it out and got some samples of it to see how my skin would react to it.

Well, let me tell you…..It was amazing!! Literally the BOMB cream that I’ve been missing (pun literally intended there). The cream is water based so it doesn’t feel heavy at all and perfect for summer! Most creams I use leave my face feeling sticky and yucky after 30 minutes of putting it on…but not this one! But I get ahead of myself…so why don’t we break it down!

Packaging

  • Simple, clean, and pure like water!
  • Has only the necessary information written to describe the product without getting confusing
  • Blue and White color scheme which goes excellent with the Aqua theme

Product

  • Smells a little tree minty but not too strong that it’s overwhelming
  • Cream is a light aqua blue color so it looks like water when you open it
  • Feels extremely light and airy
  • The older product was 18% hydration level but the one that I bought in Sephora is 70% hydration level!!

How it applies

  • Need only a dollop size to cover my entire face, though sometimes I go overboard and start putting it on my arms, legs, etc… *teehee*
  • Feels like it just melts onto my skin…like my skin is just drinking in the cream
  • Leaves my skin feeling hydrated and cool without the sticky and oily residue feeling of a regular cream

Key Question: Would I recommend it to a friend? ABSOLUTELY!!

I would absolutely positively recommend it to a friend, family member, even to a stranger! I love how it feels on my skin – cooling and well hydrated. The best part about the product is that it doesn’t feel like it clogs up my pores! I’ve been using the product for a week now and my skin feels super soft! I use it every night before I go to bed and I wake up feeling great and I’ve actually noticed that my skin has a natural glow to it! I am definitely going to be adding this to my post-makeup routine 😉

Belif, you officially have my heart! I can’t wait to try out some of your other products ❤

Chrissie Carly

OOTD: Govenors Ball

Hey Fashionistas,

So I went to my very first music festival this past weekend – Governors Ball! It was so much fun (despite the port-a-potties) and I couldn’t stop smiling all day. I loved every second of it – from eating the super yummy food to listening to music I’ve never heard of until now (teehee) to spending time with some of my best friends.

IMG_1850

Now for all my fashionistas and makeup lovers who have gone to music festivals, you all know that festival attire and makeup are, of course, of utmost importance! Some of the makeup looks I saw at the festival were gorgeous – elaborate face paintings, jewelry and beading on the face, etc. I, however, went for a more natural makeup look, BUT I did change things up with the eye makeup. Ever since I came back from San Diego, I’ve really been into the bronze gold look. For Governors ball, I decided to go with a rose pink look to match my flower crown.

I knew that I was going to be dancing in warm weather so I made sure to use my new BB cream from Clinique – Clinique Acne Solution BB Cream SPF 40. It was the perfect lightness to even out my skin tone without clogging my pores AND protect my face from the sun!

Now moving on to a little #OOTD…

For Governors ball, I wanted the focal point to be my flower crown so I opted for pretty basic colors with subtle pops of pink to complete the look. I chose my favorite cream colored lace tank top and threw that over a hot pink bralette. I wore that with my favorite pair jean shorts and some simple white sneakers. I also made sure to bring a light sweater since it was definitely going to be cold at night. We didn’t leave Gov Ball until 11pm!

This was my very first music festival and I had such a blast! I can’t wait until my next music festival or concert!!

Xoxo,

Chrissie Carly

My Post Makeup Routine

Hey Fashionistas,

Every makeup lover knows that the makeup routine doesn’t just end with just taking off makeup. Wearing makeup can really clog up your pores or dry up your skin. The post makeup routine is super important for keeping the skin healthy and fresh after a day of full face makeup.

So this is my post makeup routine. Now keep in mind, I don’t wear full face makeup every day so this routine is only after a long day of wearing makeup and I just need to treat myself to a mini spa for my face.

First, I start off with wiping off all my makeup. Me…being the Queen of Extra, of course, I not only have one makeup remover, but three makeup removers. My go to makeup remover is Garnier Skin Active -Micellar Cleansing Water

**Tip of the Day: Never ever ever go to bed with makeup on. It’s extremely bad for your skin. For those of you who are too exhausted to move, let alone go to the bathroom to take your makeup off, my suggestion is to have makeup wipes near your bed. Even if you can’t take all your makeup off, makeup wipes get most of it and at least will allow your skin to breathe when you go to bed.

With all my makeup off, I grab my Kiehl’s cleanser to wash and clean my face. My skin is very sensitive so it took me forever to find this beauty! It is strong enough to really clean my skin but soft enough where it doesn’t feel like my skin is being scrubbed raw.

E51803B0-6E4D-4BB3-A121-E4C72E62A728

Now, this is my favorite part! After a good cleanse, I like to rehydrate my face with some face masks. My go to face mask is Sephora’s Face Mask. I’ve used both the eye and face mask in Pearl and Avocado.

Depending on the lipstick that I wore (matte lipstick), I would use a lip scrub or a lip mask. My current favorite lip mask is by Bite Beauty in Champagne. To make a lip scrub, I like to mix it with sugar.

IMG_1029

Then I’ll put on a thin coat of Smith’s Strawberry Lip Balm to keep my lips nice and soft.

dscn3772

The last and final step of my mini face spa treatment is moisturizer.
