Chinese New Year Food, Festivities, and Traditions

Happy Chinese New Year (or Happy Lunar New Year)! 新年快樂! 恭喜發財!

Chinese New Year is probably one of my favorite holidays during the year! It’s a time of wishing prosperity and good luck & fortune to those around you, spending time with family, and of course – for those who are not yet married – receiving 紅包 (hong bao) or red envelopes filled with money.

Chinese New Year lasts for a month, but in my family, we celebrate it for 15 days. As of today, we’re in the 2nd week of the Lunar New Year. During this time, we eat plenty of good food ranging from little snacks like little turnip cakes and 湯圓 (tang yuan) which are little sweet glutinous rice balls to elaborate 8 – 12 course family style dishes. Usually, when visiting someone’s house, the host will have a big red round or flower shape container with different compartments filled with an assortment of candy and nuts. In my house, we keep it less traditional and simply use a three-tiered glass plates to hold these goodies.

During Chinese New Year, it is tradition to decorate the house with red decorations since red is seen as a lucky color. Red Chinese Lanterns are hung around the house and in the streets. In my house, we are a bit less traditional and we simply have huge red flowers (gladiolus) as the centerpiece on our dining room table. We also will have a plate of candy specifically Ferraro Rocher chocolates, pistachios and oranges (or tangerines) throughout the house. Oranges and tangerines were common food symbols for wealth and good luck. It also meant abundance and happiness. It’s also custom to give oranges and candy (Ferraro Rocher in my family) when visiting family members and in exchange they will give you oranges and some sort of candy when you leave.

Now my favorite tradition is receiving 紅包 (hong bao) – usually when visiting a family members house! These red envelopes contain money and are given to younger family members who are not yet married. Once married, you then start giving out red envelopes. That said, some employers may give their employees red envelopes during this holiday to wish them luck and fortune in the new year. The red envelopes come in many beautiful design with gold lettering or cute cartoons and sometimes, it even comes in pink!

The festivities that take place outside are joyous, loud, and everyone from little children to grandparents will come out to celebrate as a community. Dancers perform lion dances at different stores and businesses in hopes to bring them good luck and prosperity in the new year. Some places will even hold a fireworks ceremony to scare away any bad luck and evil spirits that may be lingering in the new year.

Chinese New Year is an exuberant and fun holiday meant to bring families together to welcome in the new year together. I look forward to it every year and I wish every one of my readers a prosperous year filled with good luck and fortune!

**Please note: the traditions listed above are traditions in my family. Each family’s traditions may vary.

Airplane OOTDs & What’s in my Travel Bag?

Hey Fashionistas,

Happy Easter!! So guess, where I am right now?? SAN DIEGO!!!

That’s right…San Diego, home to beautiful beaches and where my best friend, practically sister, and former college roommate lives right now. I’m going to be in San Diego for a week visiting my best friend Katelyn, so if you are from here, feel free to suggest some attractions to visit!

Image-1-2

Technically not San Deigo yet, but still…reunited with my best friend!

Now, traveling can be quite tiring and by the time you reached your destination, you can kind of look like a train wreck. Trust me.. I’ve been there and it was NOT cute!! So, as a fashionista, I’m going to show you how I dress comfy cute while traveling!

The two most important things to remember when flying is comfort and staying warm (the latter is mainly for me…teehee). I absolutely love flying and going to new places, but one thing I never look forward to is how cold it is on the plane. I absolutely can’t stand the cold so for all flights, I’ll always have tons of layers on.

I am wearing a magenta pink sleeveless blouse under my favorite Boston University half zip-up sweater #GoTerriers! I’m pairing this up with my favorite pair of AE jeans and brown suede boots. And…for extra warmth, my AE trench coat.

Now you’re probably thinking, why am I wearing a sleeveless blouse if I’m always cold on the airplane? Well, San Diego is going to be super warm and I am going to a surprise birthday party once I get off the plane. I gotta make sure i’m dressed to the nines – from planes to parties #LittleMissPopular 😉

My favorite part of my outfit, however, is my Forever 21 baby pink rhinestone baseball cap. Every time I travel, regardless how I travel, I will always wear a cap. It just completes my outfit, ya know??

Now moving to what’s in my bag….

IMG_1303

I generally go for a big tote bag when traveling to carry everything – electronics, makeup, snacks, etc. Right now, my bag holds:

Laptop & charger
Kindle
Michael Kors wallet/wristlet
Phone & charger
Boarding pass, tickets, and any other paper documents for travel
2 packs of gum
Makeup bag
Some yummy snacks – all vegetarian because…Lent

….And what’s in my makeup bag?

Maybelline Lipstick – Raw Chocolate
Clinique Quick Eyeliner
Elf Lash Curler
Smith’s Lip Balm
Nivea Hand Cream
Sephora Mirror

When I travel, I stay away from using face products since the air in the airplane can be extremely drying and harsh on the skin. To be honest, I actually wear no makeup other than lip balm and moisturizer to keep my skin and lips hydrated. I also wear my eyeglasses when I travel for max comfort. I will, however, give my lashes a quick curl, put on some lipstick and eyeliner right before I get off the plane, just so I look a little bit more presentable.

My Post Makeup Routine

Hey Fashionistas,

Every makeup lover knows that the makeup routine doesn’t just end with just taking off makeup. Wearing makeup can really clog up your pores or dry up your skin. The post makeup routine is super important for keeping the skin healthy and fresh after a day of full face makeup.

So this is my post makeup routine. Now keep in mind, I don’t wear full face makeup every day so this routine is only after a long day of wearing makeup and I just need to treat myself to a mini spa for my face.

First, I start off with wiping off all my makeup. Me…being the Queen of Extra, of course, I not only have one makeup remover, but three makeup removers. My go to makeup remover is Garnier Skin Active -Micellar Cleansing Water

**Tip of the Day: Never ever ever go to bed with makeup on. It’s extremely bad for your skin. For those of you who are too exhausted to move, let alone go to the bathroom to take your makeup off, my suggestion is to have makeup wipes near your bed. Even if you can’t take all your makeup off, makeup wipes get most of it and at least will allow your skin to breathe when you go to bed.

With all my makeup off, I grab my Kiehl’s cleanser to wash and clean my face. My skin is very sensitive so it took me forever to find this beauty! It is strong enough to really clean my skin but soft enough where it doesn’t feel like my skin is being scrubbed raw.

Now, this is my favorite part! After a good cleanse, I like to rehydrate my face with some face masks. My go to face mask is Sephora’s Face Mask. I’ve used both the eye and face mask in Pearl and Avocado.

Depending on the lipstick that I wore (matte lipstick), I would use a lip scrub or a lip mask. My current favorite lip mask is by Bite Beauty in Champagne. To make a lip scrub, I like to mix it with sugar.

Then I’ll put on a thin coat of Smith’s Strawberry Lip Balm to keep my lips nice and soft.

The last and final step of my mini face spa treatment is moisturizer.
